The Mission Team invites you to practice the lessons of “A Place at the Table,” by making a donation of food and/or money on Sunday, Feb. 28. On the last Sunday of every month we collect food and related kitchen supplies for the Algonquin Lake in the Hills Interfaith Food Pantry.
These are the items most needed: protein-rich foods (peanut-butter, canned beans), tomato products (paste, spaghetti sauce and diced), boxed pasta, canned tuna, pancake mix and syrup, canned fruit (especially mixed fruit and pineapple), peanut butter, boxed macaroni and cheese. (Source: website www.alith-foodpantry.org) Other non-perishable foods are welcome, and consider checking your pantry for items you already own, but may not use soon.
If you have children or grandchildren we encourage you to have them participate in selecting your donation. Encouraging children to help you select what they wish to share with others is a good way of teaching children about compassion, the less fortunate, and the way Christians encounter Christ. It’s also a good way of teaching about nutrition.
If shopping is difficult, or if you forget, gifts of cash or a check are always welcome. Actually, the food pantry, as a recognized charity, can purchase certain foods for much less than consumers. Their website mentions that they are able to purchase 8 boxes of name-brand cereal for $2.00. It sounds like “new math,” but it is true: The Northern Illinois Food Bank does “sell” food to pantries and some recognized meal programs at drastically reduced prices. So, a small cash donation will go a long way. Checks should be made payable to Christ United Methodist Church, with “Food Pantry” written in the memo area.
