Parables and Edibles – this Sunday evening, March 5th

The stories Jesus told nearly 2000 years ago are relevant in McHenry County.   Even though we live in a county that is more affluent than most, and even though we live in a country with the highest gross national product ever known to mankind…there is still human need in our communities.   In actuality some problems are more difficult because one’s extended family is no longer within walking distance, and even if it is—family structure has changed.

Home of the Sparrow offers Hope, Opportunity and Support to single women, pregnant women and women with children who are encountering difficulties.   About 73% have experienced domestic violence at some point.   The agency offers both transitional housing and supportive services that address some of the causes of homelessness.

The first speaker in this year’s Parables and Edibles series of Lenten suppers will be present to explain the needs of this agency located in McHenry, Illinois.   This is a 501(c) (3) charity which our congregation has supported the last through years by adopting a few families for the Christ United Methodist Church’s Giving Tree.   As a church congregation, individuals have been giving gifts during the Christmas season.

So, mark your calendar for the supper which begins at 5:00.   If you cannot come until 5:45 or 6:00, you are welcome to just come for the speaker.   You don’t need to sign-up in advance, unless you are planning to bring part of the meal.

Methodists are known for enjoying eating together.   The entrée for each of the evenings is posted on the church bulletin board.   We encourage you to contribute an entrée or side dish if you are able.   We would like you to sign-up for food contributions, but don’t feel that you need to sign-up for each week.

Make the parables relevant to your own life.   Attend as many of these as you possibly can.   You will also learn how you can volunteer services for these agencies.

If you have questions about the speaker, please contact Pastor Ron Greene.   If you have questions about the meal, please contact Bonnie Dodge or Maylo Hranac, co-chairs of the Church Mission Team.
