“And 100″ of your contribution goes to help the victims of disaster.” Yes, UMCOR makes this promise. UMCOR, or the United Methodist Committee on Relief, promises that all of the money you donate to disaster relief goes to the relief efforts. Nothing is taken out for administrative costs, fundraising or printing expenses. Why can they make this promise? It’s because United Methodist congregations give money each spring for administrative costs. Congregations across the United States donated money from their UMCOR offerings last spring. Now, the dollars we send and the dollars others send at other times during the year will help those who have lost their homes and their livelihood because of hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and fires.
Methodists have been helping others with disaster relief for over 75 years. A few years ago we raised money through a special annual offering known as “One Great Hour of Sharing.” We continue to have the spring offerings, but the name has changed to UMCOR offering. This year because there’s been so many, many disasters in the United States, the Mission Team will be accepting additional offerings for disaster relief. Every penny you give will be spent on some type of assistance. Nothing you give will be held back for overhead. The UMCOR overhead for 2017 was paid with donations this spring.
The CUMC Mission Team met in September and decided that 20% of the money they had earned through fundraising would be given to UMCOR Disaster Relief in the United States. The Mission Team appreciates the support you gave to the Mardi Gras bake sale, two Culver’s fundraising nights, and to the rummage sale. In November you’ll receive an insert in the Sunday bulletin showing how much money the Mission Team has designated to six different charities. Be sure to review it, and see if you or your family can add to the amount we’ve already raised. We’d like to help our brothers and sisters affected by these natural disasters, and there is a definite need in many of our states and territories.
