When we have house guests, we welcome them.   When guests come to CUMC, we welcome them.   How, though do we transfer this hospitality to those we haven’t met?  Especially, how do we show our concern for others when their home has been destroyed?   Since 1940, in a response to World War II, Methodists have been meeting the needs of others facing disasters.

The Methodist response has been a “We response.”   We collect supplies in advance when we fill the cleaning buckets.   We train volunteers in advance of the disaster by having conference disaster teams.   We regularly train “Volunteer in Mission Teams.”   We collect financial donations on UMCOR Sunday to make sure all our administrative costs are covered in advance.  As an individual homeowner I purchase insurance, keep batteries, water and extra food on hand.  However, I know I won’t be emotionally prepared for a disaster, but it is comforting to know that UMCOR is more prepared than I am, and that the volunteers that are trained know how to support people emotionally.

We are part of 12,500,000 United Methodists who reside in 136 countries.   Last year we raised over $140 million (over $10 per person) for various ministries.   About $70 million was raised for disaster response.   We did that together.   By giving money to UMCOR this Sunday, we can continue this legacy.  (UMCOR stands for United Methodist Committee on Relief)

Sunday, March 31 is the “official Sunday” for collecting money.   We realize though that the IRS may have priority in your budget, and that some of you might be vacationing.   If it is more convenient for you to give in two or three weeks, we will send in your money.   If you are giving cash, please write your name and “UMCOR” on the envelope.   If you are paying by check, please write “UMCOR” on the memo line.
