REMINDER for all summer-time & nature-loving Christ Church family folks: CUMC’s Annual Summer Picnic & Potluck will begin after worship service on Sunday, August 12th from 11:30am until ???, at the Pleasant Valley Conservation Area (shelter #1). If you haven’t already signed up, please call Judy in the church office TODAY (847-669-9009) she will be in the office until 3pm today) to let her know how many people are coming and what you will be bringing. Or, if you are unable to speak with Judy today, call Linda White in the church office tomorrow (Friday, Aug 10th). Linda’s hours tomorrow will be from 9am until 1pm. And as we “go green” for the sake of our planet (create no waste) remember to bring your own place settings (plate, cup, silverware, etc.) and reusable food containers to take back home.
You can sign up to bring any of the following (to serve 6-8 people):
- Main dish or meat
- salad
- vegetable
- chips or baked beans
- dessert
AND…we will have yard games and many hiking opportunities!
The Pleasant Valley Conservation Area in McHenry is approximately 15 minutes from church. From Algonquin Rd go North on Rt 47. Make a left on the 1st road past the Rt 176 intersection (where 47 meets 176 from the east). That road is called Pleasant Valley Rd (there’s a small orange sign, so small that it can be easily missed—if you get to the intersection where Rt 176 continues and goes west, you’ve missed your turn off!) Once you’re on Pleasant Valley Rd go 1.7 miles then turn left into the Pleasant Valley Conservation Area and follow the CUMC indicator markings to get to our shelter (shelter #1). NOTE: Remember that this is a conversation area which means that ticks most likely will be present—be sure to use proper precaution. If you’re planning on hiking in the woods (there are 5 miles of looped trails that wind thru prairie & savanna, including a 1.5 mile nature trail & another .8 mile nature trail that meanders along Laughing Creek), be sure to bring long pants, shoes, & socks tall enough so you can tuck your pant legs into them (ticks are also easier to spot on light colored clothing). We’ll also have a supply of Deep Woods Off on hand for those who’d like to enjoy the hiking trails.
